Adviser nomination: “Emily plays a character from the South in the fall play ‘The Plot, Like Gravy, Thickens’ and she does an excellent job portraying the accents, as well as the sassy personality of her character,” adviser Karla Shepherd-Johnson said. “Emily is doing all this while also keeping up with her schoolwork, doing tech crew for ‘Dracula’ at CLC, and acting in ‘Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer’ at CLC! She has three rehearsals each night! So impressive! Proud of you, Emily! Continue performing and being an amazing human being!”

How did you get interested in theater? My oldest sister started doing theater when she was around 5 or 6, and when I was in third grade I was cast in my first play. And ever since then I have been doing anything theater related possible whether I was on stage or backstage.

What do you love most about theater? I love hearing the audience react to the funny, shocking or scary moments. It helps me know that I’m not only doing this for myself but other people as well.

Favorite production you’ve been a part of: I’d have to say my favorite was “Shrek the Musical.” It was my first high school musical and it really helped cement my friendships that I formed in theater.

Talk about your role in “The Plot, Like Gravy, Thickens.” My character, Peggy Sue, is a very classic southern lass. She comes off as very sweet and innocent, but the more you hear from her the more you see she knows what she’s doing and the whole innocence thing is all an act.

What’s the most challenging part of theater? For me it’s always been memorization. I have a pretty poor memory, so I spend a lot of my free time in class or at home looking over my lines and making flash cards with the cues right before my line is said.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

Hi, I’m the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. I’ve gone through a lot of changes over the years, but what has never changed is my commitment to community and to local journalism. I’ve got an entire team of dedicated people who work night and day to make sure I go out every morning, whether in print, as an e-edition, via an app or with additional information at www.brainerddispatch.com. News, weather, sports — videos, photos, podcasts and social media — all covering stories from central Minnesota about your neighbors, your lakes, your communities, your challenges and your opportunities. It’s all part of the effort to keep people connected and informed. And we couldn’t do it without support.
