On Wednesday (March 4) The ‘Sea Piece’ fountain sculpture, which sits at the centre of the Grade II listed Boating Pond was removed and taken to London for specialist conservation.
The project marks the first time the sculpture has been relocated since its installation in 1952.
Designed by renowned sculptor Sir Charles Wheeler, who is also known for his work in Trafalgar Square and at the Bank of England, the ‘Sea Piece’ was commissioned to enhance one of Port Sunlight’s most iconic landmarks.
The fountain was switched off and the pond drained in 2021 after structural issues were identified.
The removal of the sculpture will allow reconstruction of the pond basin and the long-anticipated return of the water feature.
A statement on social media from Port Sunlight Village Trust said: “Today saw the first step in our major project to bring Port Sunlight’s Boating Pond back to life – temporarily relocating the much-loved Sea Piece sculpture to London where it will be restored by bronze conservation specialist Rupert Harris.
“We’ll certainly miss Sea Piece while it’s gone, but we can’t wait to welcome it back later this year once the Boating Pond has been fully reconstructed.
“A big thank you to Mtec for helping us move it, our community and visitors for your support, and Lord Leverhulme’s Charitable Trust for making this work possible. As a charity, we need more support to complete this once-in-a-generation project, so we would be grateful for any donations.”
