A County Durham shopping outlet is inviting families to get closer to nature this half term with a new wildlife sculpture and hands-on activities in its pollinator-themed park.
Dalton Park will host a range of free activities in its Pollinator Park on Monday, May 25, including a willow crafting workshop for children, interactive storytelling sessions and a magical balloon artist creating fun, nature-inspired designs outside the play park.
The event will also mark the unveiling of a new willow sculpture of a swift, created by artist Ruth Thompson of Sylvan Skills, who previously designed Dalton Park’s butterfly installation.
Richard Kaye, centre manager at Dalton Park, said: “We’re incredibly proud to see the continued growth of our Pollinator Park and the positive impact it’s having on local wildlife.
“This year’s launch is particularly special as we’re pleased to partner with Ruth Thompson again to create this new sculpture which will be a fantastic addition, alongside a launch event that will give families a great opportunity to connect with nature, learn more about rewilding and enjoy a day out at Dalton Park.”
The Swift sculpture is part of Dalton Park’s wider rewilding project, which also includes the introduction of swift nesting boxes to help support the species in the area.
Visitors will be able to take part in a free willow crafting workshop for children, led by Ms Thompson, from 11am to 2pm.
Other highlights include interactive storytelling sessions focused on wildlife and a magical balloon artist creating fun, nature-inspired designs outside the play park.
Created in partnership with Climate Action North, the Pollinator Park continues to evolve as a thriving habitat for insects and wildlife.
The Pollinator Park, now in full bloom for the season, offers a colourful introduction to nature and an accessible way for families and visitors to learn more about local ecosystems.
