Rome, A striking steel sculpture of opera legend Maria Callas was unveiled today in Rome, marking the second stop on its international tour. Created by renowned Greek sculptor Nikos Floros, the 500-kilogram artwork stands at the entrance of the Church of Saint Theodore of Tiron, which belongs to the Orthodox Metropolis of Italy.
The sculpture, affectionately dubbed “La Divina” by Italians, previously graced the Piazza La Fenice in Venice, a location resonant with Callas’s illustrious career. Floros’s deliberate choice of steel ensures the artwork’s longevity, allowing it to endure the journey ahead. Following its Roman sojourn, “La Divina” will travel to Paris, Vienna, Lisbon, and New York, bringing the iconic soprano’s image to a global audience.
The unveiling ceremony, held under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Italy, drew a distinguished crowd. Attendees included Deputy Culture Minister Iasonas Fotilas, Metropolitan of Italy Polykarpos, Greek Ambassador to Italy Eleni Sourani, and Greek Ambassador to the Vatican Katia Georgiou.
Artist Nikos Floros expressed his hope that the sculpture will eventually reach Greek shores, allowing his compatriots to appreciate the homage to one of their most celebrated cultural figures.
The sculpture’s presence in Rome highlights the enduring legacy of Maria Callas, whose powerful voice and dramatic interpretations continue to captivate audiences worldwide. The ongoing tour promises to further cement her status as a timeless icon of the opera world.
