Artists Open Houses (AOH) will once again invite the public to explore work by artists and makers across Brighton, Hove, Rottingdean and Ditchling, with 197 houses throwing open their doors across the first four weekends in May.

This year’s programme celebrates both tradition and innovation, with exhibits ranging from textiles and painting to inflatable sculpture and bioart.

Judy Stevens, AOH festival director, said: “We’re delighted by the fantastic response to this year’s call for Open Houses, with many much-loved venues returning alongside plenty of new ones to discover.

“There really is something for everyone this May.

“Huge thanks to Alej for the truly Brighton brochure cover, and to all the artists and makers who make is something for everyone this May.”

The 2024 AOH brochure cover features Modern Bathers by Alej Ez, an artwork inspired by Brighton’s history and personal ritual, including a nod to the legendary sea swimmer Martha Gunn.

Mr Ez, who has participated in AOH for more than 20 years, said: “When my name was announced as the 2006 AOH Brochure Cover artist, it felt electric.” He said Modern Bathers took half a year to create.

Visitors can view the piece and others from his People and Places, Revelations of Love series at his Open House, while his Dragons collection will be shown at the Royal Pavilion.

Highlights from this year’s programme include BioArt Transformations by Anna Dumitriu at Regency Town House, featuring works made with living bacteria, DNA and technology.

Mandeep Dillon’s inflatable sculptures will appear at Harrington Road, alongside photography, digital art and collage.

The DOG SHOW features dog-inspired artworks and flash tattoo events on May 2 and 3.

Ceramics will also be on display, including works by Adam Johnson at 11 Rugby Road and Boogaloo Stu’s characterful creations at Wild Iris Perfumerie.

The event also celebrates family collaborations, with three houses showcasing art by mothers and daughters across generations.

Visitors can support both emerging and established talent through direct purchases, all while enjoying a fresh perspective on the city’s creative scene.
