Federal Arts Minister Tony Burke has hit back at organisers of Sydney’s annual Sculpture by the Sea festival which this week warned of a $200,000 funding shortfall and publicly bemoaned its lack of support from Canberra.

Sculpture By The Sea founder David Handley on Wednesday said they had raised $120,000 but needed more funds for this year’s iconic sculpture walk between Bondi and Tamarama beaches to go ahead, and accused federal arts body Creative Australia of “indifference” after it rejected the festival’s last funding application in 2023.
