The First Americans Museum is a special place any time of the year, but this weekend it will be extra special.
“We’ve had visitors from all over the world, and they have mentioned that this is an experience that they have never received anywhere else,” said Marci Hensely, First Americans Museum Public Programs Manager.
The museum offers insight into the native American history as well as the present.
“We get to talk to all 39 tribes and coordinate with them to share their knowledge and give them a platform,” said Hensley.
This weekend is a huge platform for FAM’s Winter Holiday Art Market.
“We’ll have over 40 indigenous vendors selling art, jewelry, textiles, we also have free hands-on activities for families,” said Hensley.
The holiday market just wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Indigenous Santa.
“To see that gleam in their eyes, that smile on their face,” said Native Santa.
And for Indigenous Santa, there is an immediate connection with Indigenous kids.
“A lot of them come dressed in their traditional attire, and to see a Santa that looks like them, they’re very excited to see that,” said Indigenous Santa.
The market is free and open to everyone this Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 4, but Santa warns.
“There’s a reason that you be good and be nice every year. You want to be on that list, so, you know I want that for them,” said Indigenous Santa.
“We will have a top and coat drive that it, it’ll be going to the Comanche Nation Child Welfare,” said Hensley.
All and all, a fun and impactful weekend for everyone at the First Americans Museum.
“It’s a really good feeling and you feel like you’re walking into a community,” said Hensley.
