Estudiosix, a new artist residency program and cultural workspace in Austin, has announced its inaugural open call for six-month artist residencies.
Estudiosix (e6) was founded in partnership with Old 6th, a preservation-focused redevelopment project stewarding the revitalization of Old 6th Street, a 100-year-old corridor in the eastern portion of downtown Austin. Mark Hilton, e6 founder, states on the venue’s website that his purpose is to create an “alternative, community-based model” emphasizing economic sustainability, mutual support, and shared resources. Programming and events will be shaped and led by resident artists.
Jordan Nelsen, e6 Director, said in a press release, “E6 is built by artists, for artists. It’s a space grounded in curiosity, openness, and mutual support. We’re committed to fostering an environment where artists can support each other through critique, mentorship, and exchange. We’re excited to bring long-term creative development to the heart of downtown Austin.”
A group of nine Austin artists forms the test cohort currently in residence: photographer Ariana Gomez; painters Manik Raj Nakra, Alexandra Robinson, and Matt Rebholz; sculptors Agustina Rodriquez, Anahita Bradberry, and Jamal Hussain; multidisciplinary artist Leah Shirley; and Sean Ripple, whose medium is listed as “magic.”
The open call will be juried by a rotating committee of arts practitioners, who will select 15 residents for six-month residencies to encourage peer engagement and dialogue, collaboration, and community-building. Residents chosen to participate in the program will pay a $250 per month studio fee, and receive 24/7 access to their studio, shared equipment, and facilities, including an exhibition space, communal kitchen, and common areas. Living space is not provided.
Residents will be expected to participate in community events, monthly critiques, artist talks, and an open studio presentation at the end of the residency period, which runs from Tuesday, September 1, through Monday, March 1, 2027.
Artists age 21 and older not currently enrolled in a degree program are eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate a consistent artistic practice, engagement with contemporary art discourses, and are asked to provide a “clear and purposeful proposal” for their residency period.
