The £10million Star of Caledonia sculpture, near to Gretna, is one step closer to construction after plans were approved, subject to conditions, by the Dumfries and Galloway Council planning committee last Thursday, August 27.
Revised plans for the 100ft-plus sculpture were submitted earlier this year – reflecting a major step in the project which has been in the pipeline for more than two decades.
The Star of Caledonia project aims to create a new ‘regional, national and international’ cultural landmark and visitor destination for the Scotland- England Border, located at Gretna Green.
It will consist of an illuminated 33m high steel sculpture, designed by Cecil Balmond OBE, along with the provision of a visitor hub, a landscaped viewing platform and car parking.
The illuminated sculpture aims to attract around 200,000 to 250,000 visitors per year, and ‘will form a new destination and stopping point, encouraging visitors to explore the region’s natural and cultural heritage offerings’.
