SYRACUSE, N.Y. — We’ll soon know what this year’s annual butter sculpture at the New York State Fair will be, as construction has begun.
The sculpture, which weighs 800 pounds, will be unveiled Tuesday, Aug. 19, a day before the fair begins.
According to the American Dairy Association of the North East, the tradition of butter sculptures goes back to the 19th century, as they were at agricultural and state fairs in the United States then.
The association says after the state fair, the structure will be deconstructed and brought to Noblehurst Farms in Livingston County where it will be recycled into energy. The butter is placed in the farm’s methane digester, which converts manure and food waste into energy that can power a home for three days.
This year’s fair starts on Wednesday, Aug. 20 and goes until Monday, Sept. 1. Learn more here.
