Fine arts play a major role in the lives of countless students during their academic journeys. The Victoria Independent School District (VISD) strives for fine arts excellence through increased community partnerships and student resources.

David Edge, VISD fine arts director, recognized the recent success of the district’s fine arts programs at the 2025 State of the District event on Wednesday. The district is in discussions with Victoria College to make more fine arts dual credit courses available.

“What we are seeing now is wonderful growth in the right direction,” Edge said. “My mission field has always been the service of students and families that I’ve taught my entire career.”

VISD fine arts students have developed extensive community connections, giving them the opportunity to participate in creative organizations outside of school. Students participate in hundreds of events each year, Edge said.

Students participate in local parades, concerts, sporting events and pep rallies. They are active in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, art contests, art exhibits, local and regional poster contests and national dance contests.

VISD fine arts has built a large number of community connections for its students:

“We teach what a lot of folks are looking for: dependability, being self-directed, collaboration, having an excellent work ethic, problem solving skills, and being group, team and family oriented,”Edge said.

Edge highlighted recent state and national honors VISD fine arts received in recent months. The district received a Theatre District of Distinction State Award, the Best Communities for Music Education National Award and a Visual Art District of Distinction State Award.

“The VISD fine arts program is again a powerhouse,” Sheila Collazo, VISD superintendent of schools, said. “Our fine arts programs continue to flourish, providing rich opportunities for creativity, expression and cultural appreciation in music, visual arts and theatre. These accomplishments reflect our commitment to exemplary student outcomes and excellence, nurturing talent that thrives beyond the walls of our classrooms.”
