It makes sense that Australia’s biggest art collectors are our major art galleries. But as the secondary art market gears up for another year, analysis of 2025 auctions suggests the galleries are surprisingly minor players in the saleroom, with only a tiny proportion of their new acquisitions coming at the fall of the hammer.

Saleroom spoke to several galleries and other institutions about works they bought at auction last year. Photographs of Sydney in the grip of the 1919 influenza pandemic and record-setting paintings by women artists among the items snapped up.
