Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies have enchanted generations since their first publication in 1923.

Sarah Newman, manager of the Russell-Cotes, said: “We’re delighted to share the magic of Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies with our visitors.

“This exhibition brings her artistry to life, from original illustrations to her beautiful Dorset landscapes, offering a truly enchanting experience for all ages.”

The fairies, each based on real children and set among carefully observed plants, blend botanical accuracy with gentle imagination.

The display features a selection of Barker’s original artworks, early sketches, personal sketchbooks and preparatory studies, offering insights into her creative process.

Raised in a family of passionate gardeners, Barker developed a deep love of nature that shines through in every piece.

The exhibition also explores her use of carefully posed child models and precise plant observation to create her whimsical fairies.

Visitors can view rare early illustrations, learn more about her family connections, and explore her Dorset landscapes.
