Thousands of people flocked to see the summer-long installations of Laurence Edwards’ art on Lowestoft’s South Beach.
Now, Lowestoft is set to receive a new permanent piece of public art thanks to a collaboration between East Suffolk Council and the sculptor.
Mr Edwards, a celebrated sculptor and alumnus of a local art college, has been commissioned by the council to create the fresh landmark.

Council leader Caroline Topping signed an agreement at the Suffolk-born artist’s foundry in Halesworth for the creation of the new bronze sculpture.
She said: “Following the success of Laurence’s temporary installations on South Beach over the past few years, this marks an important step in our partnership to deliver a permanent landmark sculpture for Lowestoft.
“This sculpture will inspire residents and visitors alike, as his previous ones have inspired me, as well as celebrate our district’s creativity and talent.”

The proposed artwork will be developed through conversations with the community.
Mr Edwards will engage with townsfolk, young people, and local groups to help shape the theme and concept of the piece.
He will take up a studio in Lowestoft’s rejuvenated former Post Office building which is set to open next year, where visitors can learn more about his creative process.

The sculpture, set to be cast and fabricated at his Halesworth foundry, will be jointly funded by Mr Edwards, his patrons, and East Suffolk Council’s capital programme.
Potential sculpture locations are being explored to ensure the chosen site reflects the community’s emerging themes and ideas.
Mr Edwards said: “I am very excited to find myself in a position to able to create something permanent in and of the town and to be working with a community that has showed nothing but openness, kindness and even love over the last four years.”
