It was compared to Madonna’s conical bra when it appeared in the Surrey market town of Farnham earlier this year, but a sculpture of 21 rotating steel and brass objects is here to stay after the council praised its “cultural significance”.
The artwork — named A Hand’s Turn — supposedly represents the town’s history of brewing. Residents, however, questioned whether the £19,500 cost could have been better spent when it was installed without warning in April.
Further anger was caused when it was revealed that the artwork lacked planning consent, leaving the council to apply retrospectively. Its application received four letters of support and 20 objections.
