
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A new sculpture on the National Mall has sparked icy conversation online.

The word “Democracy” was displayed prominently in public, but the sculpture brought a “chilling” message. Made entirely out of ice, the artwork was titled, “Last Call — Democracy ICE.”

The artists behind the piece, Marshall Reese and Nora Ligorano, placed the sculpture in direct view of the Capitol building.
As the “Democracy” statue melts away, the metaphor points to the political climate of the country.

“Well democracy has been melting and it’s not just today,” Ligorano said. “The first time we melted down democracy was in 2006 and that was the anniversary of the Iraq war.”
