The Hare and the Minotaur has claimed seventh place in the UK’s top 15 hidden artworks, according to new research from Betway Casino.
The sculpture, which sits on a bench on Cheltenham’s Promenade, is searched for 1,320 times per year and features in 117 Instagram posts.
It was originally installed as part of a temporary exhibition, but it has since become a prominent feature in the town centre.
Betway Casino decided on its list by ranking each artwork by how hidden it was in addition to online attention and visitor engagement.
Topping the list as the UK’s best hidden artwork was Leake Street Tunnel in London, which had 64,800 annual searches and over 81,000 Instagram hashtags.
Outside of London, St Helen’s Dream Sculpture is the UK’s best hidden artwork, standing at 20 metres tall with 52,800 searches per year and 1,410 Instagram hashtags.
London’s Quantum Cloud, the most hidden UK artwork, scored 6.8 on the ‘hidden’ chart.
While Betway Casino ranked the best hidden artworks, other locations also emerged in the art scene.
Outside of those that feature in the top 15, Bristol’s Well Hung Lover is the most Instagrammed hidden artwork, featuring in 2,479 posts.
For those seeking something more thought-provoking, the Knife Angel in Oswestry and the Tommy mural in Seaham offer experiences that go beyond visuals alone.
The Knife Angel, created from over 100,000 confiscated knives, appears in 1,893 Instagram posts, while the Tommy mural, honouring First World War soldiers, features in 756.
The Hare and the Minotaur, mentioned specifically in the study, points to Cheltenham’s value in this landscape of urban creativity and elusive artworks.
