Taylor Swift has done it again. The superstar rules Billboard’s year-end Top Artists chart for a second straight year (and fourth time overall) after she loomed large on both the Billboard 200 albums chart and Billboard Hot 100 songs chart during the 2024 eligibility period (charts dated Oct. 28, 2023, through Oct. 19, 2024).
Swift is the only act to be the year’s top artist four times, previously taking the honor in 2023, 2015 and 2009. Her latest win breaks a tie with Adele for the record; since the year-end top artists category launched in 1981, the two are the only acts to be year-end top artist at least three times.
Swift has ranked among the top 10 on the year-end Top Artists tally for seven years straight. Further, she’s placed among the top 40 year-end acts in each of the 18 years from 2007-24. And in those 18 years, she’s been among the year-end top 10 acts 15 times (2008-15, 2018-24).
During the 2024 chart year, Swift placed 11 albums on the Billboard 200 — the most of any act. (Seven of those spent the full year on the chart, and the 11 titles combined to spend 535 weeks on the list in the chart year – more cumulative weeks than any other act.)
Nine of Swift’s 11 charting sets in 2024 were albums that debuted on the chart in previous years, and two were new to the tally in the 2024 chart year: 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and The Tortured Poets Department.
1989 (Taylor’s Version) is Swift’s fourth re-recorded album, and it premiered at No. 1 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart dated Nov. 11, 2023, and spent a total of six nonconsecutive weeks in the lead on the list during the 2024 eligibility period. It remained in the weekly top 40 of the chart through the rest of the 2024 chart year, save for two weeks.
The Tortured Poets Department debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated May 4, 2024, and racked up 15 nonconsecutive weeks atop the list during the 2024 chart year, becoming Swift’s album with the most weeks at pole position (surpassing the 11 weeks of both Fearless and the original 1989).
With a 15th week at No. 1 on the weekly Billboard 200, Poets tied Carole King’s 1971 release Tapestry for the third-most weeks at No. 1 among albums by women. (Poets has since notched a 16th week at No. 1, on the Dec. 14-dated Billboard 200, which falls in the 2025 chart year.) Only Adele’s 21 (24 weeks in 2011-12) and the Whitney Houston-led soundtrack to The Bodyguard (20, 1992-93) have spent more time at No. 1 among albums by women.
The Tortured Poets Department and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) finish as the Nos. 1 and 2 titles on the year-end Billboard 200 Albums recap, respectively. It’s the first time that the year’s top two albums are by the same act since 1967 — the only other time the feat has occurred — when The Monkees’ More of the Monkees and their self-titled set were Nos. 1 and 2. (The Billboard 200 began publishing on a regular weekly basis in 1956.)
Also, Swift’s 2019 album Lover and 2022 set Midnights finish at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively, on the 2024 year-end Billboard 200 Albums recap, marking the first time ever that an act has wrapped with four of the year’s top 10 albums.
On the Billboard Hot 100, Swift placed a field-leading 56 tracks during the chart year. Among those were two weekly No. 1s: “Cruel Summer” (it’s No. 12 on the year-end Hot 100 Songs recap) and “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone (No. 22).
