Sarah Bouchard Gallery presents “Every Infinitesimal Thought,” co-curated with gallery artist Kate Russo, from Sept. 27 through Nov. 2. This exhibition brings together the work of four female artists devoted to the relationships between thread and color, stitching and abstraction. It includes stitched works on paper, photographs and canvas by Cecelia Charlton, Julie Cockburn, Kate Russo and Amanda Valdez.
There will be an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 13 Nequasset Pines Road, Woolwich. RSVP is required to [email protected]. Directions provided with RSVP or appointment request.
“Every Infinitesimal Thought” draws its title from Agnes Martin, who once wrote, “There is only the all of the all/everything is that/every infinitesimal thought is part and parcel.” The works in the exhibition illuminate embroidery’s close relationship to the concerns of contemporary art, in particular temporality and materiality.
Many of the works included experiment with combining thread alongside more traditional materials of abstraction: pencil, oil paint and gold leaf. “Every Infinitesimal Thought” challenges historically held beliefs of embroidery as a feminine pastime and reimagines stitching as an essential tool for abstract thought.
This is the inaugural Curatorial Incubator Exhibition, in which the gallery partners with a visual artist to help realize a dream curatorial proposal. The gallery said it has been an honor to work with Russo on her first professional curatorial endeavor.
