Regina’s MacKenzie Art Gallery is widely regarded for promoting exceptional Indigenous artists from Saskatchewan and beyond.
The gallery’s latest exhibit is no exception.
1. Celebrating Indigenous culture
Death Boat and Other Stories: The Kampelmacher Memorial Collection of Indigenous Art, which opens Friday and runs through the spring of 2027, features the largest donation of Indigenous and Inuit artworks the MacKenzie has ever received.
The exhibition “investigates interpretations of transformation in Indigenous cultural art practices” across North America,” says a news release. “This exhibition features artworks drawn from the Kampelmacher Collection, which offer multifaceted worldviews situated in Indigenous knowledges and relationality. The themes of transitional space, place, and time inform a beautifully situated and embodied visual story.”
Edmonton-based collectors Thomas Druyan and Alice Ladner began acquiring Indigenous art in 1992 and amassed well over 1,000 pieces. The couple named the collection after Druyan’s parents, Wolf and Sala Kampelmacher.
There’s an opening reception and curatorial talk on Thursday (7-10 p.m.).
